Add numbers with two or more digits in columns, carrying when a column makes ten or more.
Reviewed by Ms. Olivia Parker, Teacher. How we check worksheets
How to use this sheet
- Have the child estimate the answer first by rounding. An answer far from the estimate needs another look.
- Use squared paper, or turn lined paper sideways, so each digit sits in its own column.
- Add the ones column first, every time, and say "regroup" aloud whenever the column makes 10 or more.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the carried ten, so 47 + 38 becomes 75 instead of 85. Write the small 1 at the top of the next column before adding it.
- Writing a two-digit total in the ones column, so 7 + 8 becomes 15 written under the ones. Write 5, and carry 1 ten.
- Starting at the left column, then having to change the answer when a column regroups. Always start with the ones.
- Lining up numbers of different lengths on the left, so 245 + 37 adds 3 to the hundreds. Line them up on the right.
