How to use this sheet
- Have the child tell a short story for a picture before writing a number: "There are 3 ducks and 2 more come."
- Let the child count the pictures, cross some out for take away, or use fingers. Counting is the method at this stage.
- Read the plus and minus signs aloud as "and" and "take away" while the child works.
Common mistakes
- Adding every problem, even take away ones. Read the sign aloud together before each one.
- Counting the crossed-out pictures as the answer. The answer is how many are left.
- Writing the numbers of the problem in the wrong order for take away, as in 2 − 5. The bigger group comes first.
