Use facts you know to add within 20: learn the doubles, add one more or one less for a near double, and add three numbers by finding two that make 10.

How to use this sheet
- Start with doubles the child knows by heart, such as 5 + 5, and build each near double from one.
- Ask the child to say the double they used: "6 + 7 is 6 + 6 and 1 more."
- For three numbers, have the child look for two that make 10 or a double, and add those first.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong double, so 6 + 7 becomes 7 + 7 + 1. Pick the smaller number to double, then add one, or the larger and take one away.
- Adding 1 for a near double when 2 was needed, as in 6 + 8. Check how far apart the two numbers are.
- Adding three numbers left to right every time and losing track. Circle the pair that makes 10 or a double first.
