How to use this sheet
- Time is not the goal yet. Let the child use any strategy, then ask which facts they knew without counting.
- Circle the facts that needed counting and do only those again the next day.
- For facts past 10, show how making a ten helps: 8 + 5 is 8 + 2 + 3, so 10 + 3.
Common mistakes
- Counting on from the smaller number, so 3 + 9 takes nine counts. Start with the bigger number and count on 3.
- Counting the first number again when counting on, so 6 + 3 becomes 8. Say 6 in your head, then count 7, 8, 9.
- Missing that 4 + 7 and 7 + 4 are the same fact. Point out the turned-around pairs on the sheet.
