How to use this sheet

  • Have the child trace the outside of the shape with a finger for perimeter, and shade the inside for area.
  • Ask the child to write the units each time: cm for perimeter, square cm (cm²) for area.
  • For composite shapes, have the child draw a line to split the shape into rectangles first.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up area and perimeter. Perimeter goes around; area covers.
  • For perimeter of a rectangle, adding only the two sides shown. A rectangle has four sides.
  • Missing the sides with no number on a composite shape. Work out each missing side first.
