How to use this sheet
- Have the child say both sounds of the blend before reading the word: /s/ /t/ in stop.
- Compare a blend with a digraph: in a blend you hear both letters; in a digraph the letters make one new sound.
- Read the words in a list first, then in the sort, so the child can focus on the sounds.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out a sound in the blend, so "frog" becomes "fog". Say the word slowly and count the sounds.
- Adding a vowel between the two sounds, so "blue" becomes "buh-lue". Keep the sounds close together.
- Mixing up r and l blends, such as "fly" and "fry". Say both words and listen.
