Use a capital letter to start a sentence, for I, for names of people and places, days, months and holidays, for the important words in a title, for proper adjectives such as Canadian, and for languages and the names of historical periods, events and documents, and for the main words in the names of organizations, acronyms, titles and initials, and short forms of days, months and streets.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child find every name of a person, place or day first, and check each starts with a capital.
- Have the child explain each capital with a reason: the start of a sentence, a name, the word I.
- For titles, have the child decide for each small word whether it is the first word.
Common mistakes
- Capitalizing common nouns for emphasis, such as "my Dog".
- Forgetting to capitalize I in the middle of a sentence.
- Capitalizing seasons, such as Summer. Seasons do not take a capital, but months and days do.
