How to use this sheet
- Have the child line up the two numbers one above the other, place under place, before comparing.
- Compare from the left: the first place where the digits differ decides the answer.
- Read both numbers aloud before choosing a sign. Hearing "forty-two thousand" and "nine thousand" makes the answer clear.
Common mistakes
- Deciding by the first digit alone, so 9,876 seems greater than 42,105. Count the digits first.
- Comparing from the right instead of the left. The biggest place counts most.
- Writing the sign backwards. The open side faces the greater number.
