How to use this sheet
- For counting cubes, have the child find the number in one layer and multiply by the number of layers.
- Have the child write the units each time: cubic units for volume, square units for surface area.
- For surface area, have the child list each face and its area, and check that they have counted every face.
Common mistakes
- Counting only the cubes that can be seen and missing the hidden ones.
- Mixing up surface area and volume. Surface area is the wrapping paper; volume is what fills the box.
- Forgetting the 1/3 in the volume of a cone or a pyramid.
- Writing square units for a volume. Volume is counted in cubes, so its units are cubic, such as cm³.
