How to use this sheet

  • Have the child divide y by x for every row of a table. If the answer is the same each time, the relationship is proportional.
  • For graphs, check two things: a straight line, and it passes through (0, 0).
  • Have the child write the equation as y = kx and say what k means in the story.

Common mistakes

  • Calling any straight line proportional. It must also go through the origin.
  • Finding k as x divided by y instead of y divided by x.
  • Calling a relationship proportional because both amounts go up. They must go up at the same rate.
