How to use this sheet

  • Say the numbers aloud as the child fills them in. Hearing "forty-nine, fifty" helps with the change of decade.
  • Point out the pattern down a column of the hundred chart: the ones digit stays the same and the tens digit goes up by one.
  • For counting back, start with short runs, such as from 25 down to 18, before longer ones.

Common mistakes

  • Getting stuck after a number ending in 9, such as going from 29 to 20 or to 210. Ask "What comes after twenty-nine?" and point to the next row.
  • Mixing up numbers such as 13 and 30 or 14 and 40 that sound alike. Say them slowly and look at the digits.
  • Losing their place on a chart. A ruler or a strip of paper under the row helps.
