How to use this sheet

  • Have the child label the hypotenuse c first: it is across from the right angle and is the longest side.
  • Write a² + b² = c² with the numbers in before working it out.
  • Check each answer: the hypotenuse must be the longest side.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the side lengths instead of their squares, so 3 and 4 give 7. Square them: 9 + 16 = 25, so 5.
  • Adding the squares when finding a leg. To find a leg, subtract the squares.
  • Forgetting to take the square root at the end, so the answer is 25 instead of 5.
