How to use this sheet
- Have the child ask the question in words: "How many 1/4s fit into 3?"
- Use the models on the sheet, or a drawing, for the first problems before using any rule.
- Check each answer by multiplying it back: the quotient times the divisor should give the starting number.
Common mistakes
- Flipping the first fraction instead of the second. Keep the first, change ÷ to ×, flip the divisor.
- Expecting division to give a smaller answer. Dividing 3 by 1/4 gives 12: there are 12 fourths in 3.
- Mixing up 1/4 ÷ 3 and 3 ÷ 1/4. Say each in words: one is a fourth shared by 3; the other is how many fourths fit in 3.
