How to use this sheet

  • Have the child round every number first and write the rounded problem above the real one.
  • Ask whether the estimate should be more or less than the exact answer, and why, before working it out.
  • Use the estimate to check an exact answer. If they are far apart, look for a slip in the exact work.

Common mistakes

  • Working the exact answer first and then rounding it. That skips the point of estimating.
  • Rounding to the wrong place, such as to the nearest ten when the question asks for hundreds. Underline the place first.
  • Thinking an estimate is wrong because it is not exact. A good estimate is close, and quick to find.
