How to use this sheet

  • Have the child check each input in the table: if one input has two outputs, it is not a function.
  • For linear or not, have the child write the change between rows and check whether it is constant.
  • Have the child explain what the rate of change and the starting value mean in each story.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking repeated outputs mean it is not a function. Two inputs can share an output; one input cannot have two.
  • Calling a table linear without checking that the inputs go up by the same amount.
  • Mixing up the starting value and the rate of change.
