How to use this sheet

  • Have the child cover the ending or the prefix with a finger, read the base word, then read the whole word.
  • Ask what the ending or the prefix adds to the meaning: -ed means it already happened, un- means not.
  • For -ed, have the child say the word aloud and listen for which of its three sounds it makes.

Common mistakes

  • Reading -ed as a separate syllable every time, so "jumped" becomes "jump-ed". It often says /t/.
  • Not finding the base word when its spelling changed, such as "hopping" from hop or "making" from make.
  • Seeing a prefix in a word that does not have one, such as "un" in "uncle".
