How to use this sheet
- Have the child read each equation aloud, saying "what number" for the box.
- Use the times table the child knows best to find each missing factor.
- Ask the child to check each answer by putting it in the box and working out the equation.
Common mistakes
- Writing the product in the box. For 4 × ☐ = 20, the box is a factor, 5, not 20.
- Dividing the wrong way, as in 4 ÷ 20. The product is divided by the known factor.
- Adding or subtracting to find the box, so 4 × ☐ = 20 gets 16. The sign is times.
