How to use this sheet

  • Act out a problem with paper strips: share 3 strips equally among 4 people.
  • Read every fraction as a division: 3/4 is 3 ÷ 4.
  • For word problems, ask what is being shared and among how many before writing the fraction.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the fraction upside down, so 3 shared among 4 becomes 4/3. What is being shared goes on top.
  • Thinking you cannot divide a smaller number by a larger one. Each person gets less than one whole.
  • Giving an answer greater than 1 when each person gets less than one whole. Check the size.
