How to use this sheet

  • Have the child say each fraction as a sentence: "3 of the 4 equal parts are shaded."
  • For a number line, have the child count the spaces between 0 and 1 before naming any point.
  • Use fraction strips or folded paper for any fraction that causes trouble.

Common mistakes

  • Counting the shaded and unshaded parts as top and bottom, so 3 shaded of 4 is written 3/1. The bottom number is all the parts.
  • Counting the marks on a number line instead of the spaces, so fourths become fifths.
  • Naming a fraction from parts that are not equal. Check the parts first.
