Say what fraction of a shape or a set is shaded, and shade a given fraction, knowing that the bottom number counts the equal parts and the top number counts the parts taken.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child say each fraction as a sentence: "3 of the 4 equal parts are shaded."
- For a number line, have the child count the spaces between 0 and 1 before naming any point.
- Use fraction strips or folded paper for any fraction that causes trouble.
Common mistakes
- Counting the shaded and unshaded parts as top and bottom, so 3 shaded of 4 is written 3/1. The bottom number is all the parts.
- Counting the marks on a number line instead of the spaces, so fourths become fifths.
- Naming a fraction from parts that are not equal. Check the parts first.
