Know that a function gives exactly one output for each input, find outputs from a rule, find a linear rule from a table, and tell linear functions from ones that are not linear.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child check each input in the table: if one input has two outputs, it is not a function.
- For linear or not, have the child write the change between rows and check whether it is constant.
- Have the child explain what the rate of change and the starting value mean in each story.
Common mistakes
- Thinking repeated outputs mean it is not a function. Two inputs can share an output; one input cannot have two.
- Calling a table linear without checking that the inputs go up by the same amount.
- Mixing up the starting value and the rate of change.
