How to use this sheet
- Have the child underline the prefix or suffix, then find the base word or root.
- Have the child put the meanings together in order: un- plus happy is not happy.
- Make a word web for one root: port in transport, export and portable.
Common mistakes
- Seeing a prefix in a word that does not have one, such as "re" in "ready".
- Changing the spelling of the base word when it does not change, as in "disatisfied". Dis plus satisfied keeps both s letters.
- Mixing up prefixes that look alike, such as pre- (before) and pro- (forward).
