How to use this sheet
- Have the child write the change between each pair of numbers above the pattern, such as +3 or ×2.
- Ask the child to state the rule in words and test it on every number, not only the first two.
- For input-output tables, have the child check the rule on each row before using it on the empty ones.
Common mistakes
- Finding a rule from the first two numbers only, so 2, 4, 8 is called "add 2". Check every step.
- Mixing up a rule that adds each time with one that multiplies.
- In a table, using the change down the output column as the rule, instead of what is done to each input.
