How to use this sheet

  • Read the story aloud first with expression, so the child can hear the rhymes, the repeated lines, or the change of voice between characters.
  • For a word question, have the child cover the word, reread the sentence, and say what word could fit in its place.
  • With a play, read it together in parts, each person taking one character, and skip the words in parentheses aloud.
  • For a narrator question, ask the child to point to the words I, me, or my before deciding who is telling the story.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a phrase such as "rained cats and dogs" literally. Ask what really happened in the story, and what the phrase makes you picture.
  • Thinking the author is always the narrator. A story told with I is told by a character, not by the person who wrote it.
  • Seeing chapters or scenes as separate stories. Ask what happens in one part that matters in the next.
