How to use this sheet
- Have the child look across each row, from input to output, and write what was done to the input.
- Test the rule on every row before writing the equation.
- Ask which quantity depends on the other, and say it as a sentence: the cost depends on the number of tickets.
Common mistakes
- Finding a rule down the y column, such as "add 4 each time", and writing y = 4 + x. Look across each row.
- Writing a rule that works for the first row only.
- Mixing up the independent and dependent quantities.
