Round the numbers or use compatible numbers to estimate a sum, difference, product or quotient, and use the estimate to check whether an exact answer is reasonable.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child round every number first and write the rounded problem above the real one.
- Ask whether the estimate should be more or less than the exact answer, and why, before working it out.
- Use the estimate to check an exact answer. If they are far apart, look for a slip in the exact work.
Common mistakes
- Working the exact answer first and then rounding it. That skips the point of estimating.
- Rounding to the wrong place, such as to the nearest ten when the question asks for hundreds. Underline the place first.
- Thinking an estimate is wrong because it is not exact. A good estimate is close, and quick to find.
