How to use this sheet
- Have the child underline the words around the new word that give clues.
- Have the child try their meaning in the sentence in place of the word and see if it makes sense.
- Look the word up after guessing, to check how close the guess was.
Common mistakes
- Guessing a meaning from what the word looks like, such as "fragile" means "frog".
- Using only the sentence with the word. The clue is often in the next sentence.
- Using the everyday meaning of a word that has a special meaning in a subject, such as "table" in math.
