How to use this sheet
- Write the steps on a card: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Have the child say the step at each turn.
- Make a short list of multiples of the divisor beside the problem before starting.
- Check each answer by multiplying the quotient by the divisor and adding any remainder.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out a zero in the quotient when a step is too small to divide, so 412 ÷ 4 becomes 13 instead of 103. Write 0 above that digit.
- A remainder as big as the divisor or bigger. That means the quotient digit was too small: try one more.
- Putting quotient digits above the wrong place. Start above the last digit used in the first step.
