Hear long and short vowels, and read and spell words where a final e makes the vowel say its name: cap and cape, kit and kite, hop and hope, cub and cube.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child read each word without the e first, then with it, and hear how the vowel changes: cap, cape.
- Draw a little jump arrow from the e back over the consonant to the vowel.
- Sort the words by vowel sound, short or long, before reading them aloud.
Common mistakes
- Saying the e at the end, so "cake" becomes "cake-ee". The e is silent.
- Reading the short vowel sound when there is an e at the end, so "kite" is read as "kit".
- Adding an e to every word to make it long, such as writing "bede" for bead. Silent e is only one way to spell a long vowel.
