How to use this sheet

  • Have a real ruler on hand and try lining up the zero, not the end of the ruler, with the end of the object.
  • For half and quarter inches, have the child count the marks between two whole numbers first.
  • For "how much longer", have the child measure both, then subtract.

Common mistakes

  • Starting at 1 instead of 0, so every length is one too many.
  • For an object that does not start at zero, reading the end number as the length. Subtract the start number.
  • Counting the marks instead of the spaces between them.
