How to use this sheet

  • Have real coins on the table and name each one: nickel, dime, quarter, loonie, toonie.
  • Count the coins worth the most first, such as toonies and loonies, then count on with the others.
  • Work on the skip counts the coins need: by 2s, by 1s, by 25s, by 10s and by 5s.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking the bigger coin is worth more. A dime is smaller than a nickel but worth more.
  • Mixing up the loonie and the toonie. The toonie has two metals and is worth 2 dollars.
  • Writing amounts over a dollar wrongly, such as 3 dollars and 5 cents as $3.5. It is $3.05.
