How to use this sheet

  • Have the child write the conversion fact at the top of each problem, such as 1 foot = 12 inches.
  • Ask whether the number should get bigger or smaller: smaller units mean a bigger number.
  • Use the conversion tables on the sheet as a reference for the first problems.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing when they should multiply. Going to a smaller unit makes the number bigger.
  • Using a metric rule, multiplying by 10, for customary units such as feet and inches.
  • Treating time like decimals, so 1 hour 30 minutes becomes 1.30 hours. It is 1.5 hours.
