Multiply a one-digit number by 10, 20, 30 ... 90 using a basic fact and place value: 4 × 60 is 4 × 6 tens, which is 24 tens, or 240.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child find the basic fact first: for 6 × 40, think 6 × 4.
- Read 40 as "4 tens", so 6 × 40 is 24 tens, which is 240.
- Check one answer with repeated addition so the child sees why it works.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the zero, so 6 × 40 becomes 24. Remind the child that 4 tens is 40, not 4.
- Adding too many zeros when the basic fact already ends in zero, as with 5 × 80 = 400. Count the tens: 40 tens.
- Adding the zero on the wrong side of the answer.
