How to use this sheet
- Draw the wholes as circles or bars: 2 3/4 is two full ones and three fourths of another.
- For converting, have the child say how many parts are in one whole first: in fourths, a whole is 4/4.
- For adding and subtracting, have the child add the wholes and the fractions separately, then put them together.
Common mistakes
- Converting 2 3/4 to 2 × 3 + 4 = 10/4. Multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the top: 11/4.
- Leaving an answer such as 3 5/4. The 5/4 holds another whole: 4 1/4.
- Subtracting when the fraction part on top is too small, as in 3 1/4 − 1 3/4. Rename a whole as 4/4 first.
