Split circles, squares and rectangles into equal parts, tell equal parts from unequal ones, name the parts halves, thirds and fourths, cut a rectangle into rows and columns of squares, and see that equal parts of the same whole can have different shapes.

How to use this sheet
- Fold paper shapes in halves and fourths before the sheet so "equal parts" is something the child has done.
- Ask the child to check each shape: are all the parts the same size?
- Use the words half, third and fourth while sharing food, such as a sandwich or a pizza.
Common mistakes
- Calling any shape cut into two parts "halves", even if the parts are not equal. Equal size is what makes a half.
- Thinking a fourth is bigger than a half because 4 is bigger than 2. More parts means smaller parts.
- Thinking halves must look the same shape. Two parts of different shapes can still be equal halves if they are the same size.
