Know that every shape with four straight sides is a quadrilateral, sort quadrilaterals by their sides and right angles, and see that one shape can have several names: a square is also a rectangle, a rhombus and a parallelogram.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child check each shape for parallel sides, right angles and equal sides, and mark them on the drawing.
- Use a tree diagram or a list: a square is a rectangle, a rhombus and a parallelogram.
- For always, sometimes or never, have the child try to draw a shape that breaks the statement.
Common mistakes
- Giving only one name to a shape that has several, such as calling a square only a square.
- Thinking a trapezoid must look like a classic trapezoid. One pair of parallel sides is what matters.
- Calling a rhombus a square because its sides are equal. A square also needs four right angles.
