Tell which strategy was used to add or subtract, and carry one out step by step: match a picture to its number sentence in Kindergarten; count on, count back, doubles plus one, make a ten, back to 10 and think addition within 20 in Grade 1; break apart both numbers, tens then ones, a friendly number and switching the order to 100 in Grade 2.

How to use this sheet
- Ask the child to explain each answer aloud, using the strategy name on the sheet, before writing it.
- For "Name the strategy", accept another strategy if the child can show that it works too.
- Keep a ten frame or a hundred chart on hand so the child can show the strategy, not only name it.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a strategy by the look of the numbers without checking that it gives the right answer. Have them work it through.
- Mixing up counting on and counting back, so 15 − 3 is worked as 15, 16, 17, 18. Point to the minus sign.
- Thinking there is only one correct strategy. Several ways can work, and some are quicker.
