How to use this sheet

  • For small numbers, have the child draw the dots in pairs. If one dot has no partner, the number is odd.
  • For large numbers, cover all but the ones digit with a finger. Only the ones digit decides odd or even.
  • Count by 2s aloud together before the sheet: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Those are the even numbers.

Common mistakes

  • Looking at the first digit instead of the last, so 38 is called odd because of the 3. Point to the ones place.
  • Thinking 0 is neither odd nor even. Zero is even: it pairs up with nothing left over.
  • Thinking two odd numbers add to an odd number. Odd plus odd is even: 3 + 5 = 8.
