Count a group of up to 20 things one by one, know that the last number said is how many there are, and show a number with dots in a ten frame, and name small amounts in dot patterns at a glance.

How to use this sheet
- Have a handful of small objects nearby, such as buttons or blocks. If a child is unsure, they can build the group on the table and count that first.
- Ask the child to mark each picture with a small dot as they count it, so nothing is counted twice.
- When a row is done, cover the pictures and ask how many there were. A child who can answer without counting again knows the last number tells the total.
Common mistakes
- Saying the numbers faster than they point, so the words and the pictures get out of step. Slow down and touch each picture once.
- Skipping a number when counting past 10, often 13 or 15. Say the teen numbers together before the sheet.
- Writing the right number backwards, such as a reversed 3 or 7. Count it as correct for counting, and work on the number separately.
