How to use this sheet

  • Have the child read each number aloud before working on it. Large numbers are easier once they can be said.
  • Draw or use the place value chart on the sheet for every number until the child no longer needs it.
  • For the value of a digit, ask for both answers: the digit, and what it is worth, such as "the 7 is worth 7,000".

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out zeros, so four thousand twenty-five becomes 425. Fill in every place on the chart, using zeros for the empty ones.
  • Giving the digit instead of its value, so the value of 6 in 4,600 is written as 6. Ask "6 what?"
  • Putting the comma in the wrong place, as in 45,00. Count three digits from the right.
