How to use this sheet
- Have the child ask "Is it a person, place, thing or idea?" for each word.
- For plurals, have the child say the word and listen: if the plural adds a syllable, as in box, boxes, it usually takes -es.
- Keep a short list of irregular plurals to look back at, such as mice, teeth and children.
Common mistakes
- Adding -s to every noun, such as "mouses" or "childs".
- For words ending in y, always changing to -ies, so "boy" becomes "boies". Only change y when a consonant comes before it.
- Missing nouns that are ideas, such as happiness or courage.
