Tell whether a table or graph shows a proportional relationship, find the constant of proportionality k = y/x, write y = kx, and say what a point on the graph means.
Reviewed by Mr. Daniel Carter, Teacher. How we check worksheets
How to use this sheet
- Have the child divide y by x for every row of a table. If the answer is the same each time, the relationship is proportional.
- For graphs, check two things: a straight line, and it passes through (0, 0).
- Have the child write the equation as y = kx and say what k means in the story.
Common mistakes
- Calling any straight line proportional. It must also go through the origin.
- Finding k as x divided by y instead of y divided by x.
- Calling a relationship proportional because both amounts go up. They must go up at the same rate.
