How to use this sheet
- Have the child label the hypotenuse c first: it is across from the right angle and is the longest side.
- Write a² + b² = c² with the numbers in before working it out.
- Check each answer: the hypotenuse must be the longest side.
Common mistakes
- Adding the side lengths instead of their squares, so 3 and 4 give 7. Square them: 9 + 16 = 25, so 5.
- Adding the squares when finding a leg. To find a leg, subtract the squares.
- Forgetting to take the square root at the end, so the answer is 25 instead of 5.
