Name circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons and other polygons in any size and turn, count their sides and vertices, and tell what makes a shape that shape, such as three straight sides and a closed outline for a triangle. Draw the matching half of a shape, and tell when two shapes are the same size and shape.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child count the sides and the corners of each shape, marking each one, before naming it.
- Look for shapes around the room after the sheet: the windows, plates and signs.
- Ask "How do you know?" for every name. The number of sides is a better reason than the look.
Common mistakes
- Thinking a triangle must point up, or a square turned on its corner is a diamond and not a square. Turning does not change a shape.
- Calling a shape a triangle when it has a curved or open side. A triangle has three straight sides that meet.
- Thinking a square is not a rectangle. A square is a rectangle with all four sides the same length.
