How to use this sheet

  • Have the child try each possible sound and pick the one that makes a real word.
  • For hard and soft c and g, have the child look at the next letter: e, i or y usually make them soft.
  • Group the silent letter words by pattern, such as kn and wr, and read them together.

Common mistakes

  • Always using the hard sound for c and g, so "city" is read as "kitty".
  • Saying the silent letter, as in "k-nife". The k in kn is silent.
  • Leaving a silent letter out when spelling, such as "nife" for knife. Learn these words by sight.
