Know that some spellings stand for more than one sound (ow in snow and cow, ea in bead and bread, c in cat and city), try each sound, and choose the one that makes a real word.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child try each possible sound and pick the one that makes a real word.
- For hard and soft c and g, have the child look at the next letter: e, i or y usually make them soft.
- Group the silent letter words by pattern, such as kn and wr, and read them together.
Common mistakes
- Always using the hard sound for c and g, so "city" is read as "kitty".
- Saying the silent letter, as in "k-nife". The k in kn is silent.
- Leaving a silent letter out when spelling, such as "nife" for knife. Learn these words by sight.
