How to use this sheet
- Talk about the rule or the word part first, and have the child find it in each word on the list.
- In look, say, cover, write, check, have the child really cover the word, and check each letter after writing.
- For words with endings, have the child say the rule aloud before adding each ending.
Common mistakes
- Doubling the consonant when the vowel is long, as in "hopping" for hoping. Double only after a short vowel.
- Keeping the silent e before -ing, as in "makeing". Drop the e before an ending that starts with a vowel.
- Mixing up -tion and -sion, or -ance and -ence. Learn the words in groups by their ending.
