How to use this sheet
- Have the child say each problem in words with the unit: "2 eighths plus 3 eighths is 5 eighths."
- Check that the denominators match before starting each problem.
- For word problems, draw a bar cut into the right number of parts and shade the amounts.
Common mistakes
- Adding the bottom numbers too, so 2/8 + 3/8 becomes 5/16. The parts are still eighths.
- Forgetting to simplify, or to write an answer more than 1 as a mixed number when asked.
- Subtracting the smaller top number from the larger whatever the order. Read the problem again.
