How to use this sheet
- Have the child read the questions first, then read the passage with them in mind.
- Have the child underline the sentence that answers each question and write the paragraph number beside the answer.
- For main idea questions, ask the child to say what the whole passage is about in one sentence.
Common mistakes
- Giving a detail as the main idea. A main idea is what the whole passage is about, not one paragraph.
- Treating an inference question as a "find it" question. The answer is not written; the clues are.
- Mixing up the lesson of a story with what happens in it. The lesson is what a character learns.
