See a two-digit number as tens and ones and a three-digit number as hundreds, tens and ones: show it with base-ten blocks, write the number that blocks show, write it in a place value chart, and in expanded form and in words.

How to use this sheet
- Have base ten blocks, or bundles of ten straws, for the first sheet. A child who can build 34 understands the digits.
- Ask the child to say each number as tens and ones: "34 is 3 tens and 4 ones."
- For expanded form, read it back as a sum to check: 30 + 4 makes 34.
Common mistakes
- Writing 3 tens and 4 ones as 7, by adding the digits. Ask how many cubes there are in 3 rods.
- Writing a number with no ones, such as 6 tens, as 6. Explain that the 0 holds the ones place: 60.
- Writing 3 hundreds, 0 tens and 5 ones as 35. Use a place value chart so every place gets a digit.
